This is a special form of Hyper-intelligence that is common enough to merit its own classification. It is a permanent enhancement of the hero's overall intelligence that is channeled into the field of mechanical design and engineering. The hero is an Edison-like genius who take existing materials and technologies and use them to create new devices or applied technologies. He can repair previously operational devices, even if the device was of an unknown type.
The hero can subtract the APs of Power from the time (in APs) necessary to learn new technologies using the Analysis subskill of the Scientist Skill. For example, if it takes 13 APs of time (8 hours) to learn the functions of an alien warp drive, a character with 8 APs of Hyper-Invention could figure the technology our in 5 APs of time (2 minutes). The complexity of technology helps to determine the time required:
- Modern technology 10 APs of time (1 hour)
- Advanced Technology 12 APs of time (3 hours)
- Alien or Futuristic technology varies from 14 APs of time (16 hours) to 20 APs of time (1 month)
The hero has the ability to manufacture or modify items using any technology he knows. He still requires adequate physical resources to create the items, though the OV/RV of the Wealth check to build the gadget is reduced by - 2 CS.
The base time to build a gadget for Hyper-Invention characters is still 18 APs (one week). Each AP of time the character adds to this base time before they roll allows them to add +1 to the AV/EV of the Gadgetry check. However, the character can subtract their APs of Hyper-Invention from the base time without incurring the penalty. For each APs of time the character subtracts from the remaining base time they subtract -1 from the AV/EV of the Gadgetry check.
Example Bob the Builder has Hyper-Invention at 8 APs, he can build most gadgets inside of 8 APs of time without penalty. If he wished to build a gadget in 7 APs he would incur a -1 to the AV/EV of his Gadgetry roll.
Characters with Hyper-Invention also get an additional 25% cost reduction when paying the Hero Point cost for building a gadget.
